KISORO, UGANDA – Aspiring local government leaders in Kisoro District have been cleared to contest, with a prominent reverend announcing a unique mission to champion the rights of the elderly.

The nomination exercise, overseen by the Kisoro District Returning Officer, Mr. Daniel Nayebare, saw candidates for various positions, including town council and sub-county chairs, officially enter the electoral race.

Reverend Hatuma Emmanuel, a well-known figure within the Muhabura Diocese where he heads the Boys and Girls Brigade, was successfully nominated as the elderly representative for Chahafi Town Council.

Speaking to journalists shortly after his nomination, Rev. Emmanuel outlined his aim to address a critical gap in service delivery, stating that a significant number of elderly citizens over eighty are missing out on crucial government support.

He attributed this issue to the lack of a dedicated representative who can consistently create awareness and guide the elderly on the necessary procedures to access the funds, which are provided under the Social Assistance Grants for Empowerment (SAGE) program.

“The main reason I offered myself for this position is that I have seen a big problem. Many elderly people over eighty years are not on the list because they lack a representative who is always there to explain to them how they can access the SAGE funds,” Rev. Emmanuel explained.

Meanwhile, in the neighbouring Nyakabande Sub-county, Mr. Ntawera Funi Evary was nominated for the LC3 Chairperson position.

Vowing to improve service delivery, Ntawera pointed to achievements in the recent term, including the provision of desks to schools and road maintenance, as a foundation to build upon.

He, however, highlighted the pressing issue of water scarcity in Kigezi village, calling for a collaborative effort between the area Member of Parliament and district authorities to provide residents with access to clean water.

The incumbent LC3 Chairperson for Nyarusiza Sub-county, Mr. Erasmus Nsabimana, was also nominated and pledged to continue focusing on infrastructural development.

Furthermore, he alerted residents to prepare for the opportunities presented by the ongoing modern construction of the Kisoro-Mgahinga road, urging them to plan how they will leverage the improved transport corridor to better market and transport their goods.
