Rubanda Uganda – An elderly woman reportedly “danced to death” yesterday during a campaign rally organized by Rubanda East MP contestant Jogo Kenneth Biryabarema.
The deceased has been identified as Mrs. Peace Zikanga, the widow of the late Singiite, and a resident of Rwenkurungu Village, Kibuzigye Parish, Bubare Subcounty in Rubanda District.
The rally took place at Mubuhinga Trading Centre, where Jogo Kenneth who is also the former Rubanda District LC5 Chairman was seen dancing with his supporters. The woman suddenly collapsed under circumstances that remain unclear.
Eyewitnesses said the woman’s lifeless body was hurriedly taken by Jogo’s supporters to her home in Rwenkurungu to allow the family to begin burial arrangements. Meanwhile, Jogo and his campaign team proceeded with their activities in Hamuhambo Town Council.
Rubanda District Police Commander, SP James Barugahare, confirmed the incident and said that preliminary investigations had not found any signs of foul play.
He added that they suspect the deceased may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
SP Barugahare urged political supporters to be cautious about their health during campaign activities.
“You can’t dance for someone until death. Of course, we suspect that alcohol played a role in this tragedy, but people must learn to support their candidates responsibly,” he said in a phone interview.
“Let our people learn to support their candidates responsibly,” he added. “You can’t dance yourself to death.”
