Kampala, Uganda – President Yoweri Museveni extended his heartfelt gratitude to Rugby Africa for bringing the iconic Webb Ellis Cup to Uganda, highlighting the country’s growing prominence in rugby and solidifying its place on the global rugby map.

The President made these remarks while hosting Rugby Africa President Herbert Mensah and his delegation at State House, Entebbe, ahead of Uganda’s hosting of the Webb Ellis Rugby World Cup Trophy Tour and the 2025 Rugby Africa Cup.

President Museveni praised rugby as a catalyst for unity and teamwork, emphasizing that the sport’s values of collaboration and shared purpose align with Uganda’s developmental goals.

He also acknowledged the commendation of Uganda’s sports infrastructure, noting that current progress is only the beginning, made possible by the nation’s sustained peace and stability.

“Rugby fosters unity and teamwork values that are essential for Uganda’s growth and development. Our sports infrastructure is still evolving, and this progress is built on the foundation of peace, which has been key to our national advancement,” said President Museveni.

This initiative is part of a broader government effort to enhance sports facilities, with 1.3 trillion shillings (approximately $361 million) allocated to upgrade stadiums, including Hoima City Stadium and Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium, in preparation for major tournaments such as CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027.

Mr. Herbert Mensah thanked President Museveni for Uganda’s hospitality and reaffirmed Rugby Africa’s commitment to developing the sport across the continent.

“Uganda’s passion for rugby and its improving infrastructure make it a vital partner in African rugby’s growth. The Webb Ellis Trophy Tour celebrates this spirit and inspires future generations ahead of our flagship Africa Cup,” Mensah stated.

The visit underscores Uganda’s rising influence in international rugby governance, recognition of its investments in sports infrastructure, and the alignment of rugby’s values with national themes of unity and collective effort.

The Webb Ellis Trophy will be displayed at public events in Kampala later this week, offering fans a rare opportunity to engage with rugby’s most prestigious prize.
