KAMPALA – Police have confirmed the arrest of a private security guard for allegedly making off with a fortune in gold and cash during a routine night shift in Kampala.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!The development was confirmed by the Kampala Metropolitan deputy spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, who identified the suspect as Akena Justine, a guard attached to Magnum Security Company.
Akena is accused of stealing a bag containing UGX 29 million in cash and 900 grams of gold, valued at approximately UGX 500 million, from a motor vehicle belonging to one Katuramu Maggie.
The incident occurred on April 10, 2026, when the suspect was deployed to guard the premises of Goldex Uganda Limited, located along Mawanda Road.
Following the theft, Akena reportedly locked up the premises and went into hiding until he was finally tracked down in Bweyale Town Council after five days, at about 10:30 PM on April 15, 2026.
“After the theft, Akena reportedly locked up the premises and went into hiding. We tracked him from Gaspa Village in Bweyale Town Council. Upon interrogation, he admitted to committing the offence. Preliminary findings indicate that Akena had used part of the stolen money to open a retail shop, from where he was apprehended,” Owoyesigyire confirmed.
Owoyesigyire added that the suspect is currently in custody at Mawanda Road Police Station as investigations continue and preparations for prosecution are underway.
